Which Is The Best Bike Storage Solution For Your Workplace?

Many businesses are trying to get back to normal after the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the government published it's roadmap to easing lockdown measures, the Prime Minister has commented that those that commute to work should avoid public transport and instead either cycle or walk.

There are also plans to increase funding to enable more people to cycle to work and this includes expanding bicycle storage. With this in mind, cycling could be the new mode of transport for many workers accross the country. Not only does it protect staff from being exposed to the virus on public transport, cycling to work complies with social distancing and is also a great form of exercise to keep fit and healthy. In addition, cycling to work is a great way to save money on petrol or public transport fares.

You will therefore need to think about installing adequate bike storage on your premises so staff can have a safe place to store their bike while in work.

To choose the right one for you, you need to look at your budget, your available space and the amount of use you reasonably expect the bike rack to get.

We have put together a useful guide to buying cycle storage to help you examine which may be the right option for you to invest in.

How Many Bikes Will I Need To Store?

  • First of all, it is a good idea to assess how many people will be cycling to work and needing a place to park.
  • You may need to send out an email to your employees to find out how many people need a space. This will help to determine what type of bicycle parking you will need and what size to go for.
  • It is pointless getting a shelter for five bikes if 10 people need to use it, and this may even end up being counterproductive, with people not wanting to cycle to work due to the lack of storage.
  • A good rule of thumb is to increase the number of employees who would use a shelter or rack on a regular basis by 25% for extra capacity. This way you will always have enough space.

For example our Traditional Cycle Rack accommodates 6 or 8 bikes and are perfect for when you have a low requirement for cycle storage or when space is an issue for you.

You could trial this bike rack system to see what the rate of use is amongst your employees. This would be great to use in a car park or outside a main entrance. It can be used freestanding or under a bike shelter. It has a twin level design so bikes can be stored efficiently, the bikes are held upright by the slots that grip the wheels.

You could line multiple racks next to each other depending on the space you have available and how many people need to store a bike.

The Cycle Rack For Adult Bikes can accomodate up to 10 bikes if you choose the 5 loop option. At 3330mm wide this would be a great option for larger premises with more staff.

They have a 1 metre gap between loops which is ideal for social distancing when there are multiple staff arriving at work at the same time. This practical cycle rack comes in a range or powder coated colours or you can have it galvanised.

Where Do I Position My Bike Shelter?

You will need to measure the outdoor space or area you want your cycle shelter to fit in. Along with capacity, you also need to ensure that the area you will put the bike shelter is big enough for the shelter you want.  Always measure the area first, making sure that you note down the height, width and depth you have to work with.

You will also need to check the ground that you will be installing a shelter on is suitable. It is advisable to fit into concrete. Tarmac isn't as good as it becomes pliable in heat so the fixings will loosen. You may want to have a builder put a concrete pad on the area you are intending to have the bike parking in readiness.

Another factor to consider is the ease of moving your bicycle shelter. Many businesses change office soaces on a regular basis, and our bike shelters are built to last, meaning that you will want to take them with you. If you are thinking about moving soon, consider a bike storage option that is easy to relocate to your new area.

If you are short on space, then a great option would be our Wall Mounted Cycle Shelter & Bike Rack which can be fitted up against an existing wall. This space saving shelter is a great alternative to other free standing bicycle shelters and compounds.

It is also important to think about the climate. If your new bike storage is going to be situated near the coast (within 5 miles) then we recommend an additional weather treatment for the steel work. This will ensure your new bike storage is protected from the elements and will last longer.

What is Your Budget?

Your budget and how much you want to spend on cycle storage will determine the type of shelter or rack to look at.

We offer cycle parking and shelters to suit a variety of budgets. From basic cost saver racks right through to sophisticated lockable compounds.

  • Covered bike racks are ideal for when you want weatherproof bike storage - they can range from one-sided protection from rain, to fully encapsulated shelters capable of withstanding storms.
  • Our Kenilworth Cycle Shelters come in four different widths: 2m,3m, 4m or 5m and you can add additional cycle loops or cycle racks.
  • Choose from a galvanised finish which is weather resistant or powder coated in a colour of your choice.
  •  As covered bike racks are more complex and larger structures, they generally require more investment and a large free space to locate.
  • Weather proof shelters, however, are the preferred choice of bicycle owning employees.

For even larger budgets where you need to install bike storage for a school, university or office with multiple people then our Cycle Compound Shelter with Gate & Canopy can accomodate up to 48 bikes. The lockable gate offers additional security and peace of mind when bikes are stored during working hours.
